Along the trail you experience cozy coffee places, historical landmarks and extraordinary accomodations . This in combination with beautiful nature and clearly marked trails is the reason why Gotaleden has quickly become popular!

The trail goes along forest paths, gravel roads and some asphalt, the total trail measures 71 km from the heart of Gothenburg to the charming small town Alingsås. The trail winds along the Säve-river and the beautiful lake Aspen. There are good opportunities to see beavers, at least you will not miss all the nests along the river. Along the Säve-river you also find a rich bird life. You experience beautiful old mills such as Jonsered and Tollered. Do not miss to take a break at the nice Garveriet (The Tannery) in Floda. On your hike, you stay in the luxurious and award-winning Nääs Factory Hotel with a history in the textile industry that dates back to the 1830s. End your hike in the charming coffee & potato town Alingsås with the cozy cobblestoned city square.

The itineraries are quite long, about 25 km per day, but the hike is technically easy. If you feel that the daily itinerary will be too long, there are options to shorten the distances by train or bus.

Itinerary

Day 1 Check in Gothenburg

Welcome to Gothenburg, check in at your hotel in the city center. Explore this friendly town and enjoy a nice dinner, maybe some fresh seafood for tonights dinner?

Day 2 Gothenburg-Aspenäs (Lerum), 29,5 km (24,5 km)

Leave your baggage at the hotel and start your hike. The first 4 km is an easy walk through the city of Gothenburg until you reach the nature reserve Delsjön; a vast area with a mix of old forest and lakes of different sizes. Now starts the nature trail and you walk immediately past many small lakes; maybe a swim? Take a pitstop for a picnic in a windbreak with a great view of the city and the surrounding forest. You continue past Kåsjön until you reach Jonsered, an old rural setting. Here, you also find Jonsereds Gardens and café well worth a visit. After Jonsered, you walk along lake Aspen on hilly paths with wonderful views. After a few challenging kilometers, you find easy walking on paths and roads into Aspenäs where you’ll stay tonight.
Total hike: 29,5 km, +442 m (24,5 km of you take local transportation the first 5 km to Skatås)

Day 3 Aspenäs-Tollered, 20,9 km

You start the day with easy walking a couple of km into Lerum. From here, the Gotaleden runs nicely along the Säveån river. Continue past Stenkullen before you enter the Säveån nature reserve, which offers 4 km of wonderful forest walks along the river. You find nice places for a picnic, or if you prefer to enjoy the food and the amazing interior of Garveriet (the Tannery) in Floda. Or both. From Floda you have about 8 km easy hike before you reach the today’s final destination: Nääs Fabriker Hotel in Tollered. Enjoy this amazing hotel and have a sauna, take a dip in the lake, get pampered: you are worth it!

Day 4 Tollered- Alingsås, 26,1 km

From Tollered you walk uphill through forests and meadows until you reach the sheep farm, Mysten. Continue through fine coniferous forest to Ingared. From here you walk on gravel and asphalt with nice views of the beautiful turn-of-the-century houses overlooking lake Mjörn. You reach Nolhaga Park and Nolhaga Castle, located just before the final destination for Gotaleden, Alingsås.
Total hike: 26,1 km, +310 m

Day 5 Check out

Your travel with EverTrek ends here, after a nice breakfast at the Grand Hotel Alingsås. It is easy to take the train back to Gothenburg, it takes approx 25 minutes.

Gothenburg by flight:

Gothenburg Landvetter Airport is only about 20 km southeast of downtown Gothenburg and is served by both domestic and international flights. Airport coaches takes only about 20 minutes.

Gothenburg by train:

The railnetwork is well connected and you find all about the domestic timetable at the national rail company, SJ. 

Local transportation in the Gothenburg area:

Västtrafik is the name of the local transportation company in the Gothenburg area. You have a choice of bus, tram, train. The network is very extensive, but you need to download the To Go App to get around in the smoothest way.
